Man Binds And Gags His Mother

After being bound and gagged by her own son late Sunday morning, a mother calls out for help. Bradley County, Tennessee Sheriff Tim Gobble says the mother feared her son David Goldston might hurt her other son, inside her home.

Sheriff Gobble says 60 year old Gwennith Lyles left her home and called 9-1-1 after her son released her and fell asleep. Goldston had tied her up to a bed with electrical tape and a phone cord and gagged her.

Neighbors heard about his threats. "I heard about him saying he was going to slit his mom's throat and other threats and stuff." Drey Reese lives right around the bend from where Bradley County's Swat team swarmed in on the house with David Goldston inside. The SWAT team surrounded 212 Hickory Oaks Drive. "I was walking and I seen tanks and unmarked police cars coming up beside me. It was just odd, I thought it was like the Army or something," Reese said.

Sheriff Tim Gobble says Gwinneth Lyles told 9-1-1 her son had a gun strapped to his side and she was afraid. Sheriff Gobble says officers found multiple knives out inside this mobile home. The sheriff says Lyles feared what Goldston might do to her other son inside her home, after what he did to her. "She said she had been tied up, bound and gagged by her son for a period of time and that he had released her and fallen asleep," Sheriff Gobble said.

But investigators kept their guard high and took no chances with a full force SWAT deployment. "Based on the initial investigation that the patrol division did, they made a determination that this person made threats to kill anyone that would come out in uniform, to kill his mother and to harm another person in the house," Sheriff Gobble said.

We asked what may have prompted Goldston into this type of behavior. Sheriff Gobble says that remains under investigation, but ended peacefully after about an hour. "Once we made contact with him he was cooperative, he came out, did not threaten anybody when he came out the front door."

The Sheriff says Goldston laid down on the front porch and they took him into custody. He made his first appearance in court this morning and his bond was set at $500,000. We found only a disorderly conduct charge in his past record in Bradley County.  Goldston now faces an especially aggravated kidnapping, possession of a gun during the commission of a dangerous felony and two counts of aggravated domestic assault.
