Greg Brown's family says if the Rhea Sheriff's department had fully enforced restraining order law their son would be alive today.

Sheriff Mike Neal defends his department.

Don Brown directs most of his rage to the man he believes behind the shooting of his son.

"What he (Greg Brown) did, spending the night was no excuse to murder him. First degree, cold blooded murder, shot in the back of the head by a coward."

Brown says his middle son, Greg Brown, found companionship, someone he could talk with in Vanessa Hawkins. Around midnight Sunday, a bullet went through her back bedroom window into Brown's head, killing him instantly. But Hawkins feels the bullet was meant for her.

She said, "He made the statement to Greg that if he couldn't have me, nobody could."

Hawkins' history with Len Rogers started heating up with their March separation and June divorce filing. We dug into jail records and found from May second until Monday, Rhea County arrested Rogers four times for violating her order of protection. But Hawkins says it didn't help.

"Every time I called I didn't get anything done. We've been to court three times and didn't get anything done," Hawkins said.

Once, Hawkins says Rogers called her 51 times in 24 hours. That's in violation of the protective order. And, she told deputies that Rogers repeatedly told her he loved her in a deranged way. And he said he was jealous. Hawkins says he came to her house Saturday night, but deputies did not arrest him.

As she held up a picture of Brown, Hawkins said, "This man who loved me so much he would give his life for me, would still be here if the Rhea county sheriff's department had done their job."

We asked Sheriff Mike Neal specifically if officers followed the law Saturday night.

"Yes, we have talked to them numerous times, back and forth."

Brown disputes Sheriff Neal and says that were true, he would not have to bury his son.

Fighting back tears, Brown said, "Back on this 'we've done our job.' If he had done it, this scum bag wouldn't have murdered my son. He wasn't man enough to face him face to face, shot him in the back of the head."

Len Rogers remains in jail but has not been charged with murder. However, detectives have sent several pieces of evidence to the crime lab for analysis. He's due in court Friday morning.

Visitation for Greg Brown is Thursday at Heritage Funeral Home on Battlefield Parkway. Viewing runs from two p.m. until 8.p.m. His funeral is Friday at Heritage at one o'clock. He will be buried at Greenwood Cemetery.
