Candidates Gear Up for Gubernatorial Election

Associated Press

With less than a year remaining before Tennessee's gubernatorial election, the four GOP candidates have been ramping up their pitches for why they should be the nominee.

State Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey and U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp both consider themselves the main challenger to Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam but spend much of their time preoccupied with each other.

Ramsey says his experience in the General Assembly gives him an advantage over a candidate who served only in Congress, while Wamp says he will do everything in his power to make sure Ramsey stays in the state Legislature.

Both dismiss suggestions that they could experience a repeat of the 2006 GOP primary for an open U.S. Senate seat in which the two candidates split the conservative vote and were easily defeated by former Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker.
