Chattanooga Police Issue EPB Scam Warning
The Chattanooga Police Department is warning citizens of potential scam artists claiming to be EPB contractors. According to Lt. Kim Noorbergen on Saturday a Hixson couple said they were approached by two men who identified themselves as EPB contractors.
The suspects told the couple EPB was replacing electrical lines in the Hixson area with underground lines and as part of this project they would be re-wiring any homes that were over 30 years old. The men told the elderly couple they would need to access to the fuse box inside their home.
After letting them inside, one of the suspects distracted the couple while the other suspect wandered around the house. While these suspects were in the home, one of them took a large amount of cash.
The elderly couple said the suspects were dressed like utility workers; one of them appeared to be in his 40-50’s. The suspects left the scene in a blue car or an small SUV.
Chattanooga Police recently alerted citizens to potential scams. They say legitimate EPB workers or contractors will have work trucks and official ID badges (pictured).
Lt. Noorbergen said, "Please make the community aware of this incident and ask anyone with information on these scammers to call the Chattanooga Police Department at 423-698-2525.
