Bowater Agrees to Correct Pollution Problems
The newsprint plant in Calhoun, Tenn. is being required to correct air pollution violations under a consent decree filed in federal court.
The agreement affects the AbitibiBowater plant in Calhoun.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reported the government filed a lawsuit last week in U.S. District Court and, on the same day, filed a proposed consent decree that would resolve the company's liability.
The government said the plant failed to get a required permit after modifying three power boilers and failed to correctly monitor condensate collected at the pulp mill.
The Montreal-based company issued a statement saying the decree ends an Environmental Protection Agency investigation that began in 2002 and the company is pleased to "have this matter in the past."
