Plaque in Honor of Late Firefighter

Members of Whitfield County Fire Department Station Nine dedicated a plaque in memory of Capt. Tommy McTee on Dec. 13.

McTee was a distinguished volunteer member of the Whitfield County Fire Department from Sept. 24, 1981 until his death on Feb. 12, 2009. He became a member of the fire department before Mill Creek had a fire station and when it was constructed became the first volunteer captain of Station Nine in 1984.

“Capt. McTee was a valuable asset to the department and provided a significant contribution in public safety to the Mill Creek / Rocky Face community throughout his long volunteer career,” Fire Chief Carl Collins said.

“He was a compassionate company officer and a great friend to all of the members of Station Nine and the fire department,” Collins said. “As a model firefighter, his dependability and consistent response to the needs of the community and brother firefighters set a high standard for other members of the Whitfield County Fire Department to follow.”

Each member of Station Nine contributed to the design and construction of the plaque, and Total Recognition Inc. assisted with the final assembly.

Along with the plaque, a Coral Bark Japanese Maple tree was donated by Larry and Judy Johnson of the Modern Woodmen of America to honor his memory. Modern Woodmen of America is also supplying another plaque to be displayed with the tree.

The tree was planted prominently in the front yard of Station Nine by those who attended the ceremony.

“Many thanks goes to Modern Woodmen of America for this generous gift of recognition as well as their past support of other Whitfield County firefighters,” Collins said.

“May God bless the memory of Captain Tommy McTee” is the inscription on the plaque.
