Folk School Opens in North Chattanooga
The Folk School of Chattanooga, formerly the Mountain Music Folk School, is hosting a ribbon cutting at 4 p.m. on April 9 at its new 250 Forest Avenue location.
The Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce is assisting with the festivities and the public is welcome to attend the event.
The Folk School of Chattanooga is a non-profit music school specializing in old-time, bluegrass, Irish, and world music. The school offers private lessons and group classes in instruments such as guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, dulcimer, piano and Irish flute. Special group classes are also offered during eight-week sessions throughout the year in topics ranging from music theory to vocal ensemble.
Co-directors Christie Burns and Matt Evans both teach at the school as well as perform together often on hammered dulcimer and banjo.
Burns, who holds an M.A. in folk studies from Western Kentucky University, has performed all over the world including Sweden, England, Scotland, Belgium, Hungary, Ireland, Switzerland, and Germany. She also plays at festivals all over the United States.
Evans, who specializes in the music of the Cumberland Plateau and the Southern Appalachians, plays banjo, fiddle, guitar, mandolin and the bones.
The Folk School of Chattanooga is now enrolling for its summer children’s music camps.
