Suspected Counterfeiter Arrested
North Georgia police say they arrested a suspected counterfeiter Tuesday.
Calhoun, Ga. Police Chief Garry Moss said, “On Tuesday, (July 27) Calhoun Police arrested an East Point, Georgia man in connection with several counterfeit checks being passed in the City Of Calhoun.”
The suspect is Melvin Daniels, 56, of 1066 Wilburn Dr., East Point, Ga. Chief Moss said Daniels was arrested at Georgia Bank & Trust while trying to pass a counterfeit check drawn on the account of C&C Freight Services Inc. Bank employee’s had received a check drawn on the same account on Monday and the check had been returned as a forgery Tuesday morning bank employee’s noticed the account’s information matched and contacted police.
Detective Lieutenant Tony Pyle said, “We have uncovered the name of the suspect who passed the first counterfeit check, and have issued warrants for, William Smith (AKA Antonio Anthony) age 45, of 70 New Castle St. Atlanta, Ga. We believe these two men may have been a part of a much larger operation, in which homeless people are recruited and driven to different areas of the state to pass counterfeit checks. We will continue to investigate this incident in an effort to locate other parties involved.”
