Collegedale Approves Beer by the Drink

A Tennessee Valley town known for it's Southern Adventist school is now serving alcohol.  Collegedale City Commissioners approved that measure at Tuesday night's meeting.  They hope beer sales spur growth and any revenue right now is badly needed.

But many folks move to this area because of its quiet community.  "It's peaceful, very nice and quiet, no trouble," says Shamia Fitch.  But some worry that way of life may be in jeopardy now that the city council has approved beer by the drink.  Starting next month restaurants can serve beer but not liquor.  City leaders say they need the sales taxes to pay police officers and other workers.  And they already believe several developers have restaurant plans in the works, which means more revenue.  It's sort of a glass half-full, glass half-empty outlook.  "Well I think it's a good idea," says Fitch.  "I think it'll help the sales.  I'm not a beer drinker but I think it'll help."  But resident Mitchell Theil disagrees.  "I don't think it will bring in restaurants like some people think.  They want wine and liquor by the drink not just beer."

One thing they agree on:  the hope that their peaceful little town will remain just that.  "No trouble, nothing like that. I don't have to worry about getting robbed," adds Fitch.

Beer sales can't start for thirty days and until after a permit has been approved. It will then take a few more months to see if thirsty customers actually improve sales.

Commissioner Larry Hanson voted against beer by the drink. He instead wanted voters to decide the issue.  Voters do get to decide liquor by the drink in Collegedale next year. It was voted down four years ago.
