Tour Groups Scheduled to Visit Battle this Year

Two tour groups will visit the Battle of Tunnel Hill this year. The Southern Museum’s annual Great Locomotive Chase Tour will visit on Saturday, September 11th as they trace the route of the infamous train chase. The Museum normally visits Tunnel Hill as part of their annual tour, but this is the first time they’ve scheduled it during the weekend of the reenactment.

“It will be very exciting to have the Great Locomotive Chase Tour visit Tunnel Hill during the Civil War reenactment. Trains played a significant role in the Civil War and Tunnel Hill had a role in both the war and being home to the oldest train tunnel south of the Mason Dixon line,” said Brett Huske, Executive Director of the Dalton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

On Sunday, a group of about 40 officers from Ft. McPherson will arrive as part of their U.S. Army Implementation. & Augmentation Staff Ride*.

This will be Ft. McPherson’s first visit to Tunnel Hill as a staff ride. Foundation members will guide them on site as they learn the history and tactical significance of the skirmishes that took place at this location.

The Battle of Tunnel Hill is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, September 11-12, 9am – 4pm, with the battle starting at 2:00pm each day.

Admission to the reenactment is $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for children ages 3-12 and free for children under three. Parking is free, but donations are gladly accepted by the Tunnel Hill Historical Foundation to help further the cause of historic preservation in the community. Admission to the Tunnel Hill Heritage Center is free during the battle weekend Saturday and Sunday from 9:00am – 5:00pm.
