ERLANGER MEDICAL CENTER
Madison Foster, genetic counselor at Erlanger, discussed a new test that is available for women who may have a genetic predisposition to breast canc
Those who have had multiple cancers, bilateral cancer, or cancer at a younger age. Those with a strong family history of cancer. Can test people who have not yet developed cancer, but it is ideal to start by testing someone in the family who has actually had cancer
-------10% of breast cancer is hereditary in which there is a predisposition or susceptibility to cancer that is running in the family.
------There are certain genes that, when not working properly, can cause an increased risk for certain types of cancers. We have testing available for some of these genes to help clarify a person's risk (ex: BRCA1/2).
-------Red flags for hereditary cancers include: multiple relatives with the same or related cancers (ex: breast, ovarian, male breast, early prostate); individuals who develop cancer at early ages (i.e., <50); more than one type of cancer in a single individual (ex: breast and ovarian) or bilateral cancer; rare cancers (ex: male breast)
------Why would someone consider this type of testing? For their own healthknowing if they are at an increased risk for certain types of cancers...positive test result may indicate an increased risk for other cancers besides just breast (ex: ovarian, pancreatic). Test result may change medical management (i.e., more frequent and earlier screening, preventative surgery, etc.). For other family members to know if they are also at increased risk and should take extra measures to reduce their cancer risk.
------When should someone be tested? Anytime in adulthood. Don't typically test minors for adult conditions.
