Update: Violent Suspect Shot and Killed By Officer
Comments 0 | Recommend 0We are learning new information in the shooting that left one man dead and an officer wounded. Around 10 Wednesday morning, authorities tell us Walker County Deputy Terry Miller attempted to serve an arrest warrant on John Coates. Police tell us the deputy found Coates at methadone clinic in Fort Oglethorpe and began to follow the suspect.
While driving, Miller called for back up, knowing that the suspect had a history of violent actions. Fort Oglethorpe Officer Mitchell Moore responded and when Coates pulled in to the Chik-Fil-A, both officers appraoched him. Authorities say Coates refused to go with them, and Moore used his taser on Coates, but it was ineffective. Coates then pulled a gun out of his truck and shot once at Moore, hitting him in the back. Fort Oglethorpe Police Chief David Eubanks says Miller then immediately shot Coates and he was later pronounced dead.
Eubanks says, "Both officers did evrything right and followed procedure perfectly." He says the officers quick actions could have saved many lives since there were so many people nearby. Melissa Hulse is one of those that watched the horrible scene. Hulse says, "Those officers are heroes and did everything they could to protect people like myself and my daughter. We should all be proud of how they handled such an awful situation."
Officer Moore did have on a bullet proof vest and was not seriously injured.
