Area Business Down After Immigration Raid
Comments 0 | Recommend 0That neighborhood and the people who work there are a major part of the area's economy. Business owners say workers from the plant filled their stores and restaurants daily. The last days have been quiet and slow.
The activity is picking up at Main Street and Broad Street the day after the bust but many say they're still avoiding the area.
"Today I did and it seemed slower in the morning because usually there's a lot of people going to the plant to work early morning and I didn't see a lot today," said Maria Fuentes, a Hispanic Restaurant Owner.
"People are scared to come. They're wondering if it's going to happen again and of course they don't want to come to this area right now. Sales are going to go lower down and I don't know. I don't know what we're going to do," said Hispanic Buisness Owner Sofia Martin.
Maria Fuentes and her family have an idea of what they'll do . Her family has owned a restaurant on Main Street for 10 years. They've seen these kind of raids before and know how bad it can be for business. They decided to close for the day Wednesday after learning about the ICE bust and say it could get worse.
"We will actually have to get some people laid off maybe we hope we don't have to do that. We don't think it's going to be that bad we hope."
But Fuentes says it's a cycle and she has faith that more workers will come to the neighborhood.
"But there's new people who come and they are willing to take a risk again to work and do what they like to do I guess."
Business owners say their customers still feel a lot of uncertainty about the area and they don't see how something like this could possibly be good for business.
Some owners say this has happened before and there will be a lull for a while for businesses in the area. But they say business will eventually go back to normal.
