Scottsboro Boy Dies-Health Department Suspects Swine Flu

Swine flu is suspected in the death of a 12-year-old Scottsboro boy.

The boy, who died at Highlands Medical Center on Monday morning, would be the third person to die from the virus in Alabama.

Alabama Department of Public Health official Jim McVay said the state has very little information on the case but knows the boy was suffering from flulike symptoms.

He said swine flu is presumed to be the likely cause of death because of the virus' prevalence in the state.

The Daily Sentinel reported Monday that the boy was a student at Collins Elementary School and several others at the school for fifth and sixth graders were suffering from similar symptoms.

Jackson County Coroner John David Jordan said his office will be conducting a child death review.
