UPDATE: Gordon County Deputies Rescue Man from Burning Car

A daring rescue in Gordon County. Three sheriff's deputies pulled a man out of burning car and it's all caught on tape.

A passerby is the first to get to a man trapped in his burning car just before exit 317 on I-75 South around 5:15 Sunday morning. He and Deputy Jeremy Battle try to break the window, but it didn't work.

"Every time they'd get down with the fire extinguisher, the flames would burst back up, something maybe like gasoline or oil," said Battle.

Deputies Josh Cochran and Chad Phillips arrived next, and as Battle tried to put out the flames, Cochran broke the passenger door window. He and Phillips finally got the man out.

"I think he was kind dazed from the wreck and we were trying to tell him to turn his legs where we could grab a hold of him and pull him out," Cochran said.

But Cochran was not dazed which says a lot, considering it was only his second day on patrol, ever.

"Just did what we had to do," Cochran said. "I would hope if I was in the same situation, somebody or my family would do the same for me."

We were there as the three men watched the video together for the first time barely twelve hours later. They wouldn't admit to being heroes, but they do say they were happy to do their job.

"We're just glad we could work together and get him out of the vehicle," said Deputy Phillips.

Battle added, "It's just training. Once you get an objective in your head, you're going to do what it takes to meet that objective."

Sheriff Mitch Ralston praised all three deputies as well as the firefighters and emergency workers who also responded. Ralston says he'll honor his men at an awards banquet in December.

"These guys went beyond the call of duty, and they acted," Ralston said. "They thought outside the box."

The man in the car, 56-year-old Dan Gloth, was flown to Erlanger Medical Center where he's being treated for his injuries.  Georgia State Patrol is investigating what caused Gloth to lose control of his car.
