Chattanooga Marriott Responds to Racial Profiling Lawsuit

In response to a lawsuit filed by the Rev. Ezra Maize in Knoxville, Tenn. naming the Chattanooga Marriott at the Convention Center as a defendant concerning his stay with the hotel on March 1, 2008, General Manager Joe Duperre stated, “At no time was the Rev. Maize denied access to any part of the hotel for any accommodations. To accuse this hotel of racial profiling is simply ludicrous, and our guests and employees throughout our long history will tell you that our reputation is second to none.”

Mr. Duperre went on to say that the alleged incident happened over a year and half ago, but and when required the hotel will defend all of its actions in court concerning the Rev. Maize’s claims and will not litigate the claims in the press.

“We also find it confusing and offensive that the Rev. Maize has said in the media that this is not about money, when after we talked to him following the supposed incident he offered to provide diversity training for us at his normal fees plus 25 percent but never contacted us again with a proposal or contract. In addition he is now asking for a settlement of $1.75 million,” Mr. Duperre said.

The hotel maintains that it does not and has not in the past profiled any guest or any persons coming into the hotel for special treatment and takes all necessary steps to ensure the safety of its guests. The hotel prides itself in its belief, diversity and equal access to its facilities for all people, Mr. Duperre added.
