City Council Members ''Stunned'' by Franklin's Arrest
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Chattanooga City Councilman Jack Benson said "I was sadly stunned, I couldn't believe it, I couldn't comprehend it, really."
Benson said he was floored to hear the news early Wednesday, that his colleague who just last night was conducting city business in now in cuffs under serious federal charges.
Councilman Manuel Rico said "I was really disappointed, shocked, but more than anything realy disappointed. You know, with as much as has been going on with elected officials this really put a black eye on public officials."
John P. "Duke" Franklin Jr. is part of a well-respected family that's been rooted in Chattanooga since the 1800's. An historic marker on Cherry Street recognizes his grandfather, G.W. Franklin, who brought his mortuary business to the city in 1894.He was a pal bearer for Booker T. Washington.
"Duke" Franklin's father, John P. Franklin Sr., also made history.
"His daddy was a school principal with me, became a city commissioner, the first African American commissioner in the city of Chattanooga," Benson said.
"Duke" Franklin has followed his family footsteps in the mortuary business, and has served as city councilman for nearly a decade.
Mayor Ron Littlefield was not available today for comment, but his spokesperson released a statement.
"We're surprised at this, and sad about it, and it's unfortunate," Richard Beeland said.
"Don't paint us all with the same brush. There are some honest officials, the majority of them. This is the exception, more than the rule," Rico added.
