Teacher Sentenced to 12 Years for Statutory Rape

A former teacher at Portland (Tenn.) High School convicted of having sex with a student has received the maximum sentence of 12 years in prison.

Sandy Binkley was sentenced Friday to two, six-year consecutive sentences. She must serve 30 percent before being eligible for parole.

She was convicted in September of two counts of statutory rape by an authority figure. The convictions stem from an incident in the Portland High School volleyball office in 2008. Binkley claimed a 17-year-old student raped her, but he claimed the sex was consensual.

Binkley was found not guilty on seven other charges stemming from allegations by two other students who claimed she had sex with them.
