Comments 0 | Recommend 0Serving the community in style!
This is the 14th annual, Community Service Day, which is sponsored by countless organizations around the community but led by the students at Southern Adventist University.
On their day off students from the school volunteer their time around the community in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
"Martin Luther King was a Christian and a humanitarian and that's why we're doing this humanitarian christian service, just to celebrate him, to celebrate his life and remember the great things he has done,"says SAU volunteer coordinator Renee Baumgartner.
To celebrate Dr. King, the students team up with different organizations around the community and do everything from yard work, cleaning and even repairing houses.
For many it is a time to make a difference in someone else's life, and for other's it's personal.
Kimberly Grace is a transfer student and says usually she would be finishing up homework or catching up on some z's. When she heard there was an opportunity to help another woman in need, she was reminded of her own struggles, and took a step in the right direction.
"When I saw Widow's Ministries was one of the services that we could do I just had a heart for a woman who is alone and can't fix things because I've been there and I really wanted to serve that way," says Kimberly Grace.
Overall these students say they want to show everyone that they are motivated to make a difference. Therefore, they are taking the day on on their day off.
Renee says, "There is the temptation to sleep in to get ahead on homework or maybe some people play video games or whatever um but the motivation is that we can better our community we can tell chattanooga and we can tell Collegedale that we believe in our community."
