Teen Drowning Victim Described As Compassionate
A teenager known for helping the helpless drowned in an attempt to save someone.
Recovery crews found 14 year old Nicklous Olsey's body close to where he jumped into the raging floodwaters near the Chattooga River in Trion.
His grandmother and mother were taking a friend of his back home. They looked at the swollen floodwaters and saw a Jeep almost submerged.
According to his grandmother, both Nicklous and his mother thought they saw an arm sticking out of the Jeep waving for help. It turns out it was a cornstalk.
His grandmother says the Chattooga high school football player and wrestler always looked out for the underdog.
Sarah Smith said, "Nicklous being like he is, he just automatically jumps out, him and Tyler both, saying we'll help him, we'll help him. They took off running but they didn't get but 20 feet and the current cut them down."
Tonight, a Trion resident says he screamed from the opposite side of the raging water for Olsey not to jump in. Almost 20 years ago, his father drowned in the same spot in severe flooding.
