T.B.I. Investigating Former Red Bank Sergeant For Sex Crime

Sgt. George Dewey Resigned Amidst Allegations

A former Red Bank sergeant is now at the center of a T-B-I probe involving a sexual crime.

Today we found out George Dewey's former colleagues asked for the investigation that initially lead to a suspension but ended with Dewey's resignation.

Everyone involved in this investigation is very tight lipped right now. Dewey has NOT been charged with anything, but his friends say he's a nice guy who worked hard for years at the police department, and that's why it's incredibly hard for them to hear he's facing sex crime allegations.

"I was totally shocked as well as everyone else in the police department," Chief Larry Sneed says. "We were totally shocked with the allegations that came forth."

And Red Bank Police Chief Larry Sneed says it's a shock that's still setting in amidst allegations that former long time Sgt. George Dewey committed a sex crime.

Sneed says allegations were brought to him January 23rd, at which point he went to city manager Chris Dorsey. They suspended Dewey, without pay, the same day.

"I was I was surprised and I believe most of us were surprised by the allegations brought against George Dewey," Dorsey says.

"And by the severity of the allegations we decided at that time to turn it over to the T.B.I.," Sneed says.

Dewey worked here at the Red Bank Police Department for more than 20 years up until he resigned January 28.

NewChannel 9 obtained Dewey's resignation letter in which he states "I feel that this is in the best interest of the Red Bank Police Department, the City of Red Bank, and myself."

And now Chief Sneed says the department is moving forward and will continue to keep the citizens of Red Bank as safe as possible.

"And they can be assured that if a police officer goes astray that they can be accountable as any other citizen or any other criminal that comes before this system," Sneed says.

Now we want to re-iterate that Dewey has not been charged, but again he resigned after these sex crime allegations came to light.

The Red Bank Police Department already replaced Dewey with Dan Knight - he'll be taking over the Sergeant Position.
