Cable Fight Continues in Chattanooga

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

The Tennessee Cable Telecommunications Association is continuing its fight against EPB to break into the cable business.

With the approval of Chattanooga City Council earlier this year, EPB is working on building a multi-million dollar Fiber-To-Home Network to provide cable and internet competition.

The TCTA represents Comcast and other cable groups and says EPB's efforts as a publicly owned utility is a clear violation of state law.

It says other cities, such as Memphis, have tried using tax-payer dollars and have not been successful. EPB contends there have been several cities that have seen measurable economic benefits. The hearing on the issue will be Friday in Davidson County Chancery Court.

The TCTA also conducted a study that shows that the public is generally not aware that they would be responsible for any of EPB's losses. It plans to present the findings of that study at this afternoon's Legal and Legislative Committee Meeting this afternoon at 3 p.m. at Chattanooga City Hall.

Look under "Associated Links" to the right to read more on EPB's Position and the Fiber to Home concept.
