It's the most wonderful time of the year, and you're invited to carol with the fishes!

Sunday, December 8, 6:30 - 9:00 PM

The Tennessee Aquarium galleries will be decked with the sounds of season-including flutes, voices, strings, and Dan Landrum on the hammered dulcimer. EMMY VETERANS BEAT UPSTARTS

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- It was a night for the old-guard, not the upstarts. And despite all the talk that the Emmys were in the midst of a sea-change, the prevailing winds blew with the comfortable favorites. The big winners this year are "Modern Family" and "Breaking Bad" -- both beating off challenges by upstart online series like "Orange Is the New Black" and "House of Cards." ABC's Modern Family captured the honors for best comedy series and "Breaking Bad" picked up best drama -- along with awards for three of its stars. The Modern Family win is its fifth straight victory in the best comedy category. That ties it with "Frasier" for the most consecutive wins.

AP Entertainment Editor says some of the upstart shows some critics expected to shine at the Emmys, fell flat instead.

Here's a bit of the "Modern Family" theme. The show won for best comedy series at the Emmy Awards last night.

EMMYS-ROBIN WILLIAMS TRIBUTE

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Like Robin Williams often did, the tribute to the late comedian left us laughing. The tribute was delivered by Billy Crystal, a colleague and dear friend of Williams. As he spoke before a hushed audience at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, Crystal was able to get the audience to focus on Williams' power to make people laugh, rather than emphasize how he took his own life earlier this month. After noting that Williams "made us laugh. Hard. Every time you saw him," Crystal let Williams' own work speak for itself, showing a series of clips of his comedy work before the sequence faded to a still image of Williams, and the screen went to black.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Bryan Cranston obviously was aware of all of the hype that Matthew McConaughey might be the one to deny him a final Emmy for his work in "Breaking Bad." But he played it off like a champ. After being named best actor in a drama, Cranston deadpanned that he almost voted for McConaughey himself. Cranston wasn't gloating, though. He says he has "gratitude for everything that has happened. His fourth Emmy ties him with Dennis Franz for most by an actor in a drama series. It was also a good night for Cranston's co-stars, Aaron Paul and Anna Gunn -- both of whom won supporting acting Emmys. The show itself won its second consecutive best drama award.

Breaking Bad executive producer Vince Gilligan says winning the top trophy was unexpected. ((note "tonight" in cut refers to Monday)) ((note cut includes the word "hell"))

EMMY-MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- It was thought that this might become his Emmy coming out party. But in the end Matthew McConaughey was more of a wallflower -- not in the action and the object of jokes. One of the running gags of the night was how a man who had won an Oscar earlier this year and had been voted sexiest man of the year by People magazine would fare with the Emmys. "True Detective" co-star Woody Harrelson joked with McConaughey that being up for an Emmy made him seem "greedy." Presenter Jimmy Kimmel said he was too handsome for his own good -- and when director Gail Mancuso won for her work on "Modern Family," she said she would spend her time making eye contact with McConaughey. And she did -- holding the actor's gaze for much of the speech.

JIM PARSONS-EMMYS/COMEDYS

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- You can now put Jim Parsons in the same company as Kelsey Grammer and Michael J. Fox. The star of "The Big Bang Theory" has won his fourth Emmy for the CBS show. That ties him with Grammer and Fox for most all-time wins as the star of a comedy series. Other comic actors scoring Emmy gold last night: Ty Burrell. he wins best comedy supporting role for his work in "Modern Family." And Julia Louis-Dreyfus gets her third straight best comedy actress Emmy. She got a big laugh as she pretended to exchange heated kisses with Bryan Cranston, who was both a co-presenter with her and appeared with her on "Seinfeld."

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who repeated her Emmy win for Veep, says official Washington has embraced the show. ((note length of cut))

SETH MYERS-EMMY HOST

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- He didn't kill it as a comedian but he didn't kill the show, either. Seth Meyers was pleasant enough in his first outing as Emmy host. Though he works for NBC and the Emmys were on his home network, Meyers wasn't shy about poking fun at his employer. He joked that NBC and other broadcasters were to be outshone by cable and online series. After noting that the Emmys were moved to avoid conflicts with other shows like the MTV Video Music Awards, he noted MTV doesn't really focus on videos anymore. He compared that to "network TV holding an awards show and giving all the trophies to cable and Netflix." The joke drew some laughs, but the premise fell through, as traditional shows held their own against the upstarts.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- His was one of the most recent. And because it was by suicide, it was one of the more shocking. But the death of Robin Williams wasn't the only one mentioned during last night's Emmy telecast. During the annual "In Memoriam" segment, there were tributes to a number of TV stars who died since the last Emmy ceremony. Besides Williams, there were tributes to James Garner, Ruby Dee, and Sid Caesar -- as singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles performed "Smile." The tribute ended with Billy Crystal's comments about Williams, followed by clips of the late comedian's work.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Sofia Vergara isn't having any of it. She says she knows who it was who complained that her comedy bit during the Emmys was a slap against women. And she says it was just the opposite. When the TV Academy's Bruce Rosemblum was talking about the organization's good deeds, he had Vergara stand on a platform that had the "Modern Family" actress rotating as he spoke. She played it off, posing and preening as the academy chief droned on. Some online commenters felt Vergara was being objectified and the bit was sexist. But backstage, Vergara attacked her attackers. She says the bit showed -- in her words -- "that somebody can be hot and also be funny and make fun of herself and work and enjoy and make money." Vergara also said she knows who started the negative comments, adding that the person who did "has no sense of humor and should lighten up a little bit."

Julianna Margulies says TV roles for women have never been better. COURTESY: NBC /Television Academy ((mandatory on-air credit))

Julianna Margulies, who won an Emmy for The Good Wife, feels as if the trophy is a reward for hard work.

LL COOL J-HELPING

NEW YORK (AP) -- Some kids heading back to school have gotten a helping hand from LL Cool J. The actor says it's important to help kids who need assistance. And he did just that on Sunday, handing out backpacks full of school supplies to kids in the New York City borough of Queens. About 2,000 children attended the event. The star of "NCIS" says even a small contribution can have a big effect of those in need.
