CSO Youth Orchestras Present Fall Concert, Nov. 18

Student soloist Bethany Thornton appears in Violin Concerto No. 2 by Wieniawski

The Chattanooga Symphony & Opera Youth Orchestras (CSOYO) opens their 2013-2014 season on November 18 at 7:30pm at Brainerd Baptist Church with a concert performed by the Symphony Orchestra with Gary Wilkes conducting, featuring a new work by Frank Ticheli, Angels in the Architecture.

Ticheli writes: “Angels in the Architecture unfolds as a dramatic conflict between the two extremes of human existence—one divine, the other evil.  The work’s title was inspired by the Sydney Opera House with its halo-shaped acoustical ornaments hanging above the stage, and by Thomas Merton, the 20th century Catholic mystic and writer, who wrote: ‘The peculiar grace of a Shaker chair is due to the fact that it was built by someone capable of believing that an angel might come and sit upon it.’” Ticheli’s music includes a solo boy soprano, organ, and an interesting collection of percussion instruments.

The CSOYO Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sandy Morris, will open the concert with a variety of delightful works, from John Philip Sousa to Pirates of the Caribbean. Also featured on the program is the winner of the 2013 CSOYO Concerto Competition, Bethany Thornton.

"SELMA" STAR COMES TO AID OF BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH

LONDON (AP) -- The actor who plays Martin Luther King in "Selma" is speaking about the racial controversy over fellow British actor Benedict Cumberbatch. David Oyelowo (oh-YEL'-oh-woh) says people really shouldn't be concerned that Cumberbatch used the outdated term "colored" to describe black actors. Oyelowo notes these days in the U.S., minorities are often referred to as "people of color" -- and there's really no difference between the terms. He also says people should look beyond the word Cumberbatch used -- and hear his message: that there are more opportunities for minority actors in the U.S. than there are in the U.K. Both actors say that needs to change.

David Oyelowo says he doesn't think fellow British actor Benedict Cumberbatch should be criticized for his use of the word "colored" in a discussion about Hollywood diversity.

<<CUT ..003 (01/29/15)>> 00:05 "he was making"

David Oyelowo (oh-YEL'-oh-woh)

David Oyelowo says if you look beyond the dated term "colored," what Benedict Cumberbatch was saying was spot-on.

<<CUT ..004 (01/29/15)>> 00:10 "trying to say"

David Oyelowo (oh-YEL'-oh-woh)

David Oyelowo says he doesn't think the term Benedict Cumberbatch used -- "colored" -- was meant as a throwback to the days of racial segregation in the U.S.

LINDSAY LOHAN - COMMUNITY SERVICE

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- What did she do -- and where did she do it? Those are questions a prosecutor is asking about Lindsay Lohan's community service. And if it turns out Lohan skimped on her court-ordered chores, the prosecutor says he'll try to have her tossed in jail. Santa Monica, California, Chief Deputy City Attorney Terry White's questions prompted a judge to schedule a hearing to look into the matter. Among other things, White claims some of Lohan's "service" was done in London -- while the actress was starring in a play. He says having Lohan doing a meet-and-greet with fans isn't what the court had in mind.

AP Entertainment Editor Oscar Wells Gabriel reports a prosecutor in Santa Monica, California is questioning whether Lindsay Lohan really did the kind of community service she was supposed to.

BERNIE MAC - LAWSUIT

CHICAGO (AP) -- Bernie Mac's widow has dropped a wrongful death lawsuit against his Chicago doctor. Rhonda McCullough claims a dermatologist -- Rene Earles -- failed to notice her husband was having respiratory problems in the weeks before he died in 2008. Bernie Mac had sacroidosis (sahr-coy-DOH'-sis) and died of pneumonia. An attorney for the comedian's widow says the lawsuit can be refiled after some "internal issues" are fixed. But an attorney for the doctor tells the Chicago Tribune the suit was dismissed because there's "no legitimate case" against the doctor.

"AMERICAN SNIPER" - JESSE VENTURA

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The movie is out -- and is a box office hit. But that doesn't mean the war of words has ended over the hero of "American Sniper" and former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura. Ventura is a former Navy SEAL -- and won a $1.8 million in a defamation suit against the estate of Chris Kyle, the sniper portrayed in the movie. Ventura has challenged an account in the shooter's book claiming he punched Ventura out at a bar in 2006. Ventura says he won't see the film because he considers the deceased Kyle a liar -- and "there is no honor in lying."

"GHOSTBUSTERS" CAST SET

NEW YORK (AP) -- Remember all the talk about a remake of "Ghostbusters" with a female cast? It's closer to reality, now that a cast has been announced. Starring in the new version will be Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Production is to begin later this year and the director says the movie will be released in July of 2016.

`AMERICAN IDOL'

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Have we already seen the next "American Idol?" J-Lo thinks so. The Idol judges were blown away by 16-year-old Maddy Hudson. Jennifer Lopez says the Northern California teenager could win it all this season. The judges loved her look and her sound. She was so good, each judge gave her a golden ticket. Harry Connick Junior even assured Maddy that he wasn't just being nice. The Idol auditions stay in San Francisco tonight.

GREGG ALLMAN MOVIE

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- Here's the latest in the case against those who tried to make a movie about singer Gregg Allman. Prosecutors have said they never promised immunity to a filmmaker indicted in the case. Hillary Schwartz was working on "Midnight Rider" last February when a camera assistant was struck by a train during filming. A lawyer for Schwartz claims his client was promised immunity in return for an interview with prosecutors. But prosecutors say there was no deal. Georgia authorities say the crew was on the tracks without permission. Work on the film has since stopped.

BENZINO - ARREST

ATLANTA (AP) -- An arrest for a former cast member of "Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta." Police in Atlanta say Benzino was arrested at the city's airport after a loaded gun was found in his carry-on bag. He's charged with carrying a gun in an unauthorized location. Benzino says it was all an "unfortunate and honest mistake."
