It'™s a Saturday Night Fever at Denim and Diamonds, Feb. 23

The mirror balls have been hung!  Jive talkin’ isn’t allowed!  Join us for Denim & Diamonds: Saturday Night Fever for the best party this side of Studio 54!

Chattanooga physicians and community  leaders will come together at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at the Chattanooga Convention Center for an evening of music and food, and a celebration of healing. The event will be the ninth annual Denim and Diamonds fundraiser, which helps support the Project Access community health partnership and other community health initiatives. The event is organized by the Chattanooga Hamilton-County Medical Society, Medical Foundation of Chattanooga, and Medical Alliance.

Denim & Diamonds: Saturday Night Fever, presented by Dale Buchanan & Associates, Kindred Health and University Surgical Associates, will celebrate the decade of disco – the 1970s. This evening will include dinner, dancing, live and silent auctions, and lots of surprises.

Attendees are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite star or icon from the 1970s. Polyester will be back in style for one night only.

“Every year more people say that this is one of the best events in town,” said Rae Bond, Medical Society and Foundation Executive Director.  “We look forward to Denim & Diamonds continued commitment to being a fun and exciting community event.”

This year an online auction will take place before the event to encourage community-wide participation in raising funds for Project Access. The site will go live at noon on Feb. 4, 2012, and can be accessed through www.chattdenim.org.

Project Access has provided $98 million in charity health care to the working poor since its inception in April 2004. Since the program began, more than 12,000 individuals have been evaluated for eligibility. Each month an average of 400 patients are actively receiving care or finalizing enrollment. Those who do not qualify for the program are referred to other appropriate community resources and programs.

“Project Access is helping people get back on their feet, return to work, and often obtain their own health insurance again,” Mrs. Bond said. “The funds we raise at Denim & Diamonds support this work so that we can continue to help as many people as we can.”

The event is open to the public. Table sponsorships are available starting at $1,000. Individual tickets are $100. To purchase your table or tickets, call the Medical Society at 622-2872 or visit www.chattdenim.org.

Sponsorship opportunities, including exclusive sponsorships, are available ranging from $500 to $7,500. Opportunities include exclusive sponsorships of activities and events. For more information, contact Kevin Lusk at 622-2872.

Project Access is a nationally-recognized, physician-led community health initiative that coordinates free medical care for low-income, uninsured residents of Hamilton County. Partners, who provide free services to Project Access patients, include the Erlanger, Memorial and Parkridge Hospital Systems, and Kindred and Siskin Hospitals.

BEN McKENZIE-GOTHAM

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Ben McKenzie says his run-in with a concrete post won't keep him from trying to do his own stunts. The actor split his noggin on the set of "Gotham" -- but he says he's fine, now. McKenzie wasted no time making the world aware of his injury -- posting photos online of his head both before and after he got stitched up. He figures that word would have gotten out anyway, so he might as well get out in front of the story. McKenzie says he won't shy away from the rough stuff on set going forward. He says he appreciates actors extending themselves physically. Gotham premieres on Fox on Monday.

Ben McKenzie says his mishap on the "Gotham" set hasn't dulled his enthusiasm for doing his own stunts - or as much of them as he can, anyway.

MARIA CONCHITA ALONSO-VENEZUELA

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- Maria Conchita Alonso is a native of Venezuela. But the ruling government there says it wants no part of her. Leftist leaders are taking steps to revoke her citizenship -- since she's such a bitter critic of the government. Venezuela's foreign ministry has asked a judge to scrub her from the records as a Venezuelan citizen. The actress appeared in "Predator 2" and "Moscow on the Hudson." She born in Cuba but her family brought her to Venezuela as a child to avoid Cuba's Communist rule.

EMMA WATSON-U.N. AMBASSADOR

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (AP) -- To her fans, Emma Watson is the star of the "Harry Potter" films. But to some young women in Uruguay, she's more of a hero than an actress. That's because she visited the capital of Montevideo (mon-tay-vih-DAY'-oh) on Tuesday -- and called for more women to be involved in government. She submitted a petition with 4,000 signatures to parliament as part of her role as goodwill ambassador for the United Nations' women's agency. Some lawmakers brought their own children and grankids to the event -- and women outside the parliament praised her for raising the issue. Watson says she was "immensely touched" by the reception she got.

Emma Watson says even young women turned out to support her appearance.

TOM HANKS-"FACTORY MAN"

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) -- He liked it so much -- he's doing a miniseries on it. Tom Hanks is translating his love for the book "Factory Man," he wants to do the story for TV. Hanks says his production company Playtone will do the book as a miniseries for HBO. News of the effort comes from the Web site deadline.com. The series will be based on the work by Beth Macy of Roanoke, Virginia. It's about a man who fights to save his furniture company and his employees' jobs against an illegal onslaught of cheap imports from China. In a tweet, Hanks wrote the book was so good, he'd give it 142 stars.

LIZA MINNELLI-SURGERY

NEW YORK (AP) -- Liza Minnelli says she's "overwhelmed" with the love and support she's gotten as she recovers from back surgery. A statement from the 68-year-old actress was issued yesterday -- as she remains in a California hospital after her operation this week. Minnelli's back problems have kept her on the shelf most of the year. And she was hurting too much to attend Joan Rivers' funeral earlier this month. Doctors say Minnelli is expected to make a full recovery.

"AMERICA'S GOT TALENT" FINALE

NEW YORK (AP) -- A magician has pulled off quite a trick -- winning "America's Got Talent." Mat Franco takes the $1 million prize and a headlining gig in Las Vegas. Franco says it's "unfreakin' believable." Singer Emily West is the runner-up. The guest performers on last night's live finale included Ed Sheeran, Pitbull and Jennifer Hudson.

BILL COSBY-ART

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Bill Cosby and his wife have been collecting art for decades. And soon, the public will be able to check out some of it. The Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art says 62 artworks from the Cosby collection will go on view. The display of the pieces will begin in November.

ADRIAN PETERSON-NFL

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) -- First, the Minnesota Vikings sat down star running back Adrian Peterson for a game after he was indicted on a charge of child abuse. Then the team brought him back. When sponsors complained, the team says he's out again -- and may not play the rest of the season. Was the team reacting to the loss of ad revenue or pressure from the NFL, which has been taking a hit over how it handles off-the-field problems? The answer, according to team president Mark Wilf: "absolutely not." Wilf's dad, who owns the team, says the team "made a mistake" and took the extra step of banning Peterson for now as a way to -- as he put it -- "get this right." Peterson is in legal trouble after being charged with smacking his 4-year-old son with a wooden switch. Peterson is currently on paid leave from the team. Peterson says he gave his son the same kind of discipline he got as a kid -- and didn't mean to hurt the boy.
