Larry Gatlin to Perform at CSCC Graduation
Approximately 450 students of Cleveland State’s class of 2012 will walk across the stage to receive their degrees and certificates during the 44th Commencement Ceremony Saturday, May 5 at 10 a.m. in the L. Quentin Lane Gymnasium.
“Although commencement is the culmination of our academic year, it is only the beginning of the lives of our graduates,” Cleveland State President Carl Hite said. “We hope that our graduates will make a significant impact in the world of work, but also in their communities.”
Country Music singer/songwriter Larry Gatlin will deliver the keynote address during the commencement ceremony. Of the 42 songs he charted between 1973 and 1990, including 17 Top 10s and the Grammy-winning “Broken Lady,” he single-handedly wrote every one, an achievement unmatched by any other artist in popular music. His smash “All The Gold In California” stands as a country crossover classic.
Now, after a 17-year absence from the Nashville recording and songwriting scene, Gatlin and his harmony-singing brothers, Rudy and Steve, are back with a new album, Pilgrimage, on Curb Records. Its title is a nod to Gatlin’s first album, The Pilgrim, which debuted in 1974.
Gatlin and his brothers also lent their name to a musical theater in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and agreed to perform there for 25 weeks each year. He soon discovered, however, that the theater deal would work only if the Gatlins performed there virtually year-around. The decision to do that cost Gatlin two starring Broadway roles, but it kept him and his brothers in the musical spotlight for the next five years.
When the Myrtle Beach phase ended, the Gatlins took their show to the entertainment complex in Branson, Missouri. They also went on the road occasionally for special concert appearances. Ultimately, Gatlin decided to return to the city where he’d had his greatest musical triumphs—Nashville.
“Everyone recognizes the name Larry Gatlin as an outstanding musician and songwriter, but he also has made a significant commitment to education,” stated Hite. “I think both the graduates and the audience are going to be in for a treat as he combines music with words and discusses the future of our graduates.”
For those who are unable to attend the commencement ceremony, it will also be broadcast live online through the Cleveland State website at www.clevelandstatecc.edu and on WTNB Channel 5 at 10 a.m.
The night before the commencement ceremony, Gatlin will be performing a concert for all of the 2012 graduates, and members of the community are invited to attend, as well. All 2012 CSCC graduates get in to the concert for free, and any elementary, junior high, high school, or college student can get in for $5. General admission is $10. To register for tickets, visit the website at http://mycs.cc/gatlin. Tickets are also available at the CSCC Business Office, open Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Washington left the series in 2007 after a controversy over his use of an anti-gay slur against fellow actor T.R. Knight. Washington repeated the slur at the 2007 Golden Globe awards. Despite apologizing and meeting with gay-rights groups, he was cut loose from the show.
ARIEL WINTER - "MR. PEABODY AND SHERMAN"
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Ariel Winter had heard of "Mr. Peabody and Sherman" before she was cast as Penny in the movie version of it, but she had never seen it.
