Randy Travis Arrested Naked, Charged with DWI
DALLAS (AP) — Randy Travis is accused of driving while intoxicated and threatening to kill state troopers after the country singer crashed his car and was found naked and combative at the scene.

A mug shot released on Wednesday by the Grayson County Sheriff's Office shows a battered-looking Travis in a T-shirt, with a black eye and dried blood on his face. He later walked barefoot out of the county jail wearing scrubs and a University of Texas ball cap.

It was the second Texas arrest involving alcohol this year for the Grammy-winning singer, who was cited in February for public intoxication.

The sheriff's office in Grayson County, located in far North Texas along the border with Oklahoma, received a 911 call at 11:18 p.m. Tuesday about a man seen lying in a road west of Tioga, where the entertainer lives.

Texas troopers responding to the scene said a Pontiac Trans Am registered to the 53-year-old Travis had been driven off the road and struck several barricades in a construction road.

Travis was not wearing clothes at the time of his arrest and made threats against the Texas troopers, said Tom Vinger, a Department of Public Safety spokesman. He said the singer refused sobriety tests, so a blood specimen was taken.

Vinger did not immediately respond to questions on how Travis suffered his facial injuries or whether any troopers were injured during the arrest.

"I know the vehicle suffered significant damage to the front end during the wreck," Vinger said in an email to AP.

Grayson County Sheriff's Sgt. Rickey Wheeler said Travis faces charges of retaliation or obstruction in addition to driving under the influence.

"Travis had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath and several signs of intoxication," according to a statement from the sheriff's office. "While Travis was being transported, Travis made threats to shoot and kill the troopers working the case."

A Travis representative said there was no immediate comment on the arrest.

Travis was arraigned and released on $21,500 bond Wednesday morning from the jail in Sherman, about 60 miles north of Dallas. Blood test results are pending.

District Attorney Joe Brown says his office will review the report of the arrest. The felony retaliation or obstruction charge will be referred to a grand jury within a month or six weeks, while the misdemeanor DWI case could be filed as soon as prosecutors decide whether to proceed, Brown told The Associated Press.

The felony count carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $10,000.

Travis was also charged with public intoxication in February after being spotted in a vehicle parked in front of a church in Sanger, about 20 miles from Tioga.

It's been a rocky couple of years for the North Carolina native, best known for hit songs like "Is It Still Over?" and "On the Other Hand." He divorced Elizabeth Travis in 2010 after 19 years, but retained her services as his manager, a role she held for more than three decades.

Earlier this year, though, Elizabeth Travis filed a lawsuit claiming that Randy Travis made it impossible for her to do her job and terminated her management contract without proper notice. She said her ex-husband sent several men, including an armed guard, to clean out her offices.

Randy Travis countersued in May, accusing his ex-wife of divulging confidential information about him in order to damage his reputation and career.

Initially turned down by Music Row, Travis found success in the mid-1980s and became a pivotal and important figure in country music. Initially considered too country, his deep-voice traditional style inspired millions to buy his albums and artists like Alan Jackson to follow his lead.

He's charted 16 No. 1 country singles and remains an influence for many in Nashville.

Associated Press Music Writer Chris Talbott assisted with this report from Nashville, Tenn.

IDRIS ELBA: BOND WRITER DISMISSES HIM AS "TOO STREET" FOR 007 ROLE

LONDON (AP) -- The man who wrote the new James Bond novel thinks people might be reading between the lines too much about his comments on casting for the movie based on the book. One of the candidates to be the new Bond is Idris Elba. But writer Anthony Horowitz says he feels Elba is "too street" to play 007 and that he isn't "suave" enough. Elba would be the first black in the history of the franchise to play the spy. That started an online firestorm, with people accusing Horowitz of suggesting Bond could only be a white guy. Horowitz says that isn't what he meant. In a Twitter post, he says: "I'm a writer not a casting director so what do I know?"

NEW YORK (AP) -- There is a temporary cease-fire between NBC and Donald Trump. The Republican presidential candidate will be a guest on "The Tonight Show" starring Jimmy Fallon. He will discuss his campaign and other issues. Other guests on the Sept. 11 show will be Terrence Howard and Pharrell Williams. Trump has been sniping at NBC since launching his bid for the White House. The network cut Trump loose as host of "Celebrity Apprentice" -- a move Trump said was an act of cowardice. NBC says it was because of his remarks about Mexican immigrants.

JIMMY FALLON - STEPHEN COLBERT

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Do you watch late night TV shows because of the host -- or because of the guests? NBC and CBS hope you'll be motivated to tune in by a combination of both -- and so they are loading up their late-night lineups with big names next week. That's when Stephen Colbert begins at the helm of "The Late Show" on CBS. He will have Vice President Joe Biden (BY'-dehn), George Clooney, Scarlett Johansson, Amy Schumer and Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush. NBC is countering with its lineup for "The Tonight Show" with Jimmy Fallon. Among those on with Fallon the week of Colbert's debut include Richard Gere, Jessica Simpson, Justin Timberlake, Andy Samberg, Carrie Underwood and the rap duo of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.

VMA RATINGS IMPROVE

NEW YORK (AP) -- As the saying goes, there's strength in numbers. In the case of the ratings for the MTV Video Music Awards, the strength comes from the number of networks the show was on. Nielsen says just over 5 million people watched the VMAs on Sunday night. That would have been a sharp drop off from last year's show, which drew 8.3 million. But MTV's corporate parent simulcast the show on 10 separate networks -- including outlets like Comedy Central, BET, CMT, TV Land and Logo. When you add that up, the total is 9.8 million, enough to outpace last year's audience.

JOE BROWN RELEASED FORM JAIL

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- First he was out of options. Now, former TV judge Joe Brown is out of jail. The former Memphis judge has been released after serving a five-day sentence for contempt of court. Brown turned himself in last Thursday -- and was released yesterday. Brown got himself in trouble doing something more than a year ago that he usually didn't tolerate in his TV courtroom: mouthing off at a judge. Last month, the Tennessee Supreme Court declined a review of an appeals court ruling that said Brown had to do the time.

CARMICHAEL SHOW - RATINGS

NEW YORK (AP) -- It's been a while since a summertime comedy has done this well. NBC says its "Carmichael Show" drew 4.8 million viewers for its debut on Sunday. That's the largest audience for any summertime comedy in eight years.

OSCAR PRODUCERS NAMED

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The man nominated for an Oscar for his work on the 2012 hit "Django Unchained" is going to be calling the shots on the upcoming Oscars telecast. Reginald Hudlin has been named to produce the 88th Academy Awards early next year. He will be joined by David Hill for the telecast. Oscar ratings dropped dramatically last year, when Neil Patrick Harris was the host. The Academy Awards will be broadcast live on ABC on Sunday, Feb. 28.
