A Survivor's Message

This month, pink is the new black as October rolls in as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  It's the time to recognize and honor those impacted by the diagnosis.

As research continues to make great strides when it comes to treating patients with medicine, one breast cancer survivor who believes EMOTIONAL support is equally important. 73-year-old Linda Gainor, 73, is celebrating 35 years of surviving breast cancer.  She remembers how she felt the day the doctor gave her the news. "I was so afraid of that feeling of terminal death sentence prognosis.  I was so afraid that I wasn't going to see my children grow up."

Linda knows first-hand the emotional toll it takes but says words of inspiration help cancer victims to stay strong. She says, "If you have breast cancer, you do not need to be afraid. You need to use the wonders of medicine and science today and let the doctors do their job and there's great hope...great hope. I stand here 35 years later to testify to that".

After a modified radical mastectomy,  Linda says she wishes mammograms were encouraged when she was diagnosed. She found the lump on her breast with a self exam and says, " Women really need to have those mammograms. They're so important. They don't hurt. They're easy to get and you to have it assure that you will never have this happen to you".

She feels that it's not just about the patient staying positive, she says family members should treat the person as if nothing is different. "That's all she needs to get through it is support and love and faith."

Linda connects with October in a big way.  She says this month is even more important than her own birthday.
