January is National Blood Donor Month and Blood Assurance is asking area residents to add “saving lives” to their New Year’s resolutions.
According to America’s Blood Centers, the average blood donor donates twice each year. Just one more donation would prevent critical blood shortages across the country.
As the regional non-profit blood center, Blood Assurance is the sole provider of blood components for more than 50 hospitals and healthcare facilities. Just one donation can benefit up to three patients when separated into components of platelets, plasma and red blood cells.
Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with parental consent) and weigh at least 110 pounds. Donors at any Blood Assurance will receive a long-sleeved t-shirt commemorating National Blood Donor Month.
