While a lot of people are still feeling the effects of over-indulging during the holidays, people promise themselves every January they will eat better and get fit. The intentions are good but some are not sure how to start. The fitness experts at Workout Anytime gave us a few tips to get you off the sofa and moving again.
They say many people set unrealistic goals, get discouraged and quit after a few months. Josh Carter, Director of personal training says to avoid that pitfall is to first to want good health. Once you've acknowledged that, it's time to start moving.
"The first step is absolutely getting out of bed," he said. "Just getting off the couch and going out and doing something whether that be doing basic home fitness, joining a gym or just start walking."
Making fitness a part of your lifestyle is an important part of getting healthy. It's not just about jumping on a treadmill for thirty minutes a day.
"You have to change the way you eat," said Carter. "You have to change the way you sleep. You have to change the way you exercise and generally when you do that not only you are you going to see the results physically but, emotionally you're going to start feeling that enticement. You're going to be happier."
Forty-five percent of people make resolutions but only eight percent keep them. Making those goals a lifestyle can be hard but there are ways to keep those resolutions from turning into good intentions.
Jason Jackson is the General Manager and part owner of Workout Anytime. They believe in what they call "accountabilibuddies". That means having someone to work out with and keep each other accountable is better than going it alone if you want to stay motivated. Jackson says it helps to try new things, as well.
"You want to step out of your comfort zone and try all the things that you didn't get to try in the previous year. So, sticking with small attainable goals, it feels so much better to attain a goal than to set something large and never get there".
Carter says, "As soon as you can smile then you know the achievement's been made and you know from then on out what you want to be, you know how you got there and you know that's the life you want to live".
And for that, there's no better time to start than right now.
