Cleveland firefighters are investigating the city's first fire-related death of the New Year. The victim is 72-year-old Betty Cheek. Investigators say Cheek was bedridden and they believe she may have fallen asleep with a lighted cigarette.
The fire happened Monday evening around 5:30 on Golf Street, just off Dalton Pike.
Her son, who lives next door, tried to rescue his mother, but could not make it inside due to the intense smoke.
The home is considered a total loss.
Investigators don't suspect arson. Her body is being taken to Nashville for an autopsy.
