Dug Gap Brush Fire Under Control
No Homes Were In Danger
The brush fire on the side of Dug Gap Mountain is still burning, but the Georgia Forestry Commission said Thursday that it's under control.
Barely a wisp of smoke was visible Thursday where plumes of smoke and flames were seen earlier in the week.
Commission public information officer Eric Mosley said only standing dead trees in the "burnout" area could be burning. The burnout area is where firefighters intentionally burned underbrush to starve the fire of fuel.
No homes were in danger and a human cause is suspected.
The helicopter that dumped water on the fire has been pulled out, but a bulldozer, six Forestry Commission firefighters, five Hays State inmates and two guards remain on the scene.
