''Scooting'' to Save Gas

Bill Tracy lives in Chattanooga. And eight months ago, he bought a scooter.

With what he's saving on gas, he hasn't looked back.

"I guess my most expensive gas bill, the other day I paid $4.10 worth of gas," he says.

He says he gets nearly 119 miles a gallon on his scooter.

Jen Obal with Scenic City Scooters says the savings on gas, and the relatively cheap prices for scooters have lead more people to their doors.

"Since gas prices have gone up, people have gone from looking at the scooter as something fun to do as something that's more necessary to do to save some money on gas," she says.

And you're likely to see more scooters out on the road this weekend with a national convention of riders coming to town.

Wynn Pennington came up from Atlanta. You can't help but notice his scooter out on the road--and all the mirrors that come along with it.

"Oh, it's mostly for art's sake," he says about the mirrors. "There's 30 mirrors on here and about 4 work, but I got to use them on the highway--which I don't recommend--but I got out on the highway and I could actually see the turn signals of the guys behind me."

Scooter riders say there are some dangers out on the road.

While they're street legal and can go out on the interstate, some are meant only for city driving and don't go very fast.

But they say, even the faster ones--ones that reach up to around 100-miles an hour, still get between 50-55 miles on a gallon of gas.

They also have the luxury of being convenient and cheap, according to Vespa Club of America president JD Merryweather.

"You have some vehicles that are getting 100 miles to the gallon. You know they're easy to park, insurance is cheap," he says.

As for Tracy--these days, he just can't seem to avoid one big question wherever he goes.

"It's fairly common at the grocery stores...people come up to me and ask me how many miles I get to the gallon...that's usually the first question I get. I usually tell them and they kinda stand awestruck and walk away," he says, laughing.
