Healthy Choices for Students

Schools are just about to begin in Hamilton County. Before they crack open those books some educators met to discuss the importance of healthy environments for their students.

In a time where bullies and online chats consume children's lives teachers and counselors say it's more important than ever to teach their students healthy behavioral skills.

"Bullying has been big at all the national, state and local conferences. It's never ending. It's always good to keep up with all the topics for every conference yeah no question," said Judy Barker, a social worker for Hamilton County Schools.

A common topic at this conference: coaches and mentors affecting character building among young people.

"It's the third year for the conference which takes PE teachers and counselors from public and private schools and brings them together for one common goal: bettering their students mentally and physically.

"A good regiment of physical activity. I mean you get a young person who's been out sweating and working hard. They're not going to be violent, not going to be problems, more likely to cooperate, more productive," said Congressman Zach Wamp.

After some public conflicts in area schools many say they're looking forward to starting this year off on the right foot.

" We're looking forward to a better school year. A good school year. I think it's very important to get off to a good start. Just look at the holistic approach to education," said Wamp.

Congressman Wamp also says part of improving the schools is creating better laws on issues like truancy. He also says arts and physical education should be reintroduced after they were put on hold under the no child left behind act.
