Tennessee is one of 44 states that require all newborns to undergo a hearing test before leaving the hospital. Babies born outside hospitals are required to be tested within 48 hours under the law that took effect in Tennessee on July 1. With roughly 12,000 babies born annually in the U.S. with a hearing loss, federal health officials recommend all have a hearing check in the first three months of life.
