Wind Storm Damage
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Two people died in the state of Georgia after severe storms struck the Peach State. That same system left thousands without power and several reports of damage.
" We just got into the house when we heard the big pop and crack and said ' Oh my gosh what was that?' and looked and there was already down it was across the house then," said Booby Garland, a neighbor in Dayton.
This house on 11th Avenue off Highway 27 in Dayton isn't the only one with serious damage. Strong wind gusts all day Sunday brought down power lines, trees, limbs and parts of buildings around the Tennessee Valley.
" Even though it doesn't look like a lot of damage a local tree service company says when the limbs of this tree hit the roof it damaged the inside of the roof and the owners are looking at replacing it."
" Whew we got a lot of trees down blowed down up here from that windstorm. This one fell on a house yesterday evening. It did I want to say almost $10,000 worth of damage to the house. They're gonna put a new roof on the whole house," said Leeroy Thurman, a tree service owner.
Although wind storms move quickly and hardest hit areas are hard to predict, Leeroy Thurman says he's been in the business long enough to know some stories like the one on 11th Avenue can be avoided.
" We told the owner 2 years ago when we were here working that it was bad that it needed to be fixed and taken down but he's kind of sick right now.," said Thurman.
Moday crews worked to clear roads and yards of debris. Near Chattanooga, power crews took down damaged poles and replaced them with metal poles that they hope will withstand wind storms like this one, which is one of the worst some people in the area can rememeber.
" That wind was just about as bad as I believe I've saw it. Just lasted all day hardly let up to it," said Garland.
Sunday night EPB says they had more than 4,000 customers without power from the wind storm. They worked all night, brought in extra crews and restored all power by mid morning.
