UPDATE: Police Officer Kills Teenager
Comments 0 | Recommend 0There are two very different versions about what happened in connection with the deadly police shooting at the East Lake Courts apartments Wednesday night.
Either way a mother and family is grieving the loss of a 15-year-old boy.
Gloria Duncan said "I'm mad as hell, first of all because that was my baby."
It was her son, 15-year-old Alonzo O'Kelly, Jr., who was at the center of a massive police investigation Wednesday night.
Just before 9:00 p.m. Chattanooga Housing Authority Police Lieutenant Erik Reeves said he heard gunshots in East Lake Courts. As he went to where he thought the shots came from he confronted two young men - one of them was O'Kelly.
"He encountered a man holding a gun, he gave multiple commands for the guy to drop the gun, he didn't so Lt. Reeves had to fire and he fired to take care of the threat," according to Chattanooga Housing Authority Police Chief Felix Vess.
Chattanooga Police, who are investigating the incident, said Wednesday night O'Kelly died from a shot to the chest. They also said O'Kelly had a gun and was shot shortly after he ran from Lt. Reeves toward an apartment.
But people who said they were there at the time tell a different story.
Jeremy Hawthorne said "he was shot in the back, why couldn't it have been one time, they say he threw the gun and ran."
Dominique Harper added "Mr. Reeves came around and that's when Dooney [O'Kelly] threw the gun and took off running, they just started shooting at him and he didn't even have the gun, he threw the gun and he ran around the building before he even shot him."
Both men said O'Kelly was shot in the back four times, not in the chest as earlier reported.
"That is incorrect information and right now the investigation is going on," Chief Vess said. "As soon as we can release that information we will."
Chief Vess did not clarify whether a gun was pointed at Lt. Reeves, but reinforced that Lt. Reeves felt threatened.
Keep in mind there have been numerous recent shootings in the area so police are mindful of how quickly a situation can turn violent. In June there have been seven shooting cases near East Lake Courts leaving about a dozen people with injuries.
But O'Kelly's mother believes her son was murdered by a police officer.
"I know there's a lot going on out there, don't get me wrong, but if he wasn't standing there pointing that gun at him why would you shoot," Duncan said. "And then when he took off and run you didn't see no gun but continue to shoot?"
An autopsy on O'Kelly began Wednesday morning and the results will help answer questions from two differing stories..
Chief Vess said Lt. Harper is on paid leave, which happens in all police related shootings as they're being investigated.
