Grave Situation in LaFayette
Families are outraged after a popular cemetery in LaFayette is cleaned out of all flowers, benches and memorabilia.
NewsChannel 9 began receiving several phone calls about the city cemetery in LaFayette. People are saying they're devastated to learn the items they left in memory of their loved ones had been thrown out in the trash. And the people responsible were ordered by the city to do it. City employees began clearing the hundreds of tombstones Monday. We checked it out and learned from the mayor that the city made a mistake. The employees were only supposed to clear dead flowers, what they took was much more. Glenda Pegg's husband is buried here. She says she feels like she's been robbed. "It's like coming back here to bury him again" she said.
The mayor says people can bring their receipts to city hall to be reimbursed. But many people we talked to today said their things were irreplaceable. He says there will be a meeting at 6:15 Thursday evening to answer any questions the public may have.
