UPDATE: Hit And Run Leaves Young Mother Dead
Comments 0 | Recommend 0A young mother killed in what was thought to be a car wreck, may now be the victim of a homicide. Police in Soddy Daisy are trying to determine what really happened to Brandi Johnson. Chief Phillip Hamrick tells us in his more than 20 years as an officer, he's never seen an accident like this.
He explains that the car Brandi Johnson was driving somehow ran off the road and into a ditch. Then, he says Johnson ended up in the other lane of traffic, and that's when another vehicle struck her. "We are looking for any witnesses or anyone with information about this to come forward so we can try to tie up any loose ends."
The marks are still clear on Green Pond Road where Soddy Daisy Police say 22 year old Brandi Johnson was killed. But authorities say the circumstances around her death are not as recognizable.
Police say Friday night, Johnson was coming home to a Halloween party after picking up some pizza, when her car swerved off the road, and landed on its side. Chief Hamrick says, "Right now we are not able to determine what caused the accident, what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway."
Chief Phillip Hamrick also doesn't know whether Johnson was then ejected from her car, or somehow stumbled out. But, he knows she ended up in a dangerous spot in the opposite lane, at a dangerous time. "All we know at this time is that the victim wound up in the opposite lane of traffic and was struck by another vehicle."
Chief Hamrick says Johnson's body ended up, more than 120 feet from where she was struck. He says by the time officers arrived on scene, the driver who hit her was gone. Chief Hamrick says her body is undergoing an autopsy, as investigators try to figure out which accident took her life.
Donna MacGuire says she was like a mother to Johnson. Now, she wants answers in her death. "Somebody hit her and left the scene of an accident, somebody needs to come forward."
Latasha Johnson was are close with Johnson and says, "Now we need to bury a 22 year old young mother, and whoever done it needs to own up to what they did."
Her friends held hands, and prayed for answers at the scene of Johnson's death this weekend.
Chief Hamrick says they're still looking into whether Johnson was wearing a seatbelt, but says it does not look like alcohol or speed were factors in Johnson's initial crash.
He's also asked the Tennessee Highway Patrol to help in the investigation.
He says they are looking for more information from the driver of a white car who witnesses say left the scene before police arrived.
