Grandmother Avoids Jail Time
A 63-year-old grandmother won't go to jail as long as she doesn't own a gun in the near future.
Effie Kauffman wrote NewsChannel 9 in the spring to help explain why she had her gun taken away from officers
We found out Mrs. Kauffman is charged with aggravated assault and kidnapping..
Bledsoe County Sheriff Morris said when his officer answered a domestic call in August 2008, Mrs. Kauffman was holding a girl at gunpoint and threatening to shoot her.
That girl was married to her grandson, and apparently the two did not get along.
Kauffman admits, she had the gun and did not give it to officers after they asked her to put it down.
"He said gimme the gun, 'I said you'd have to whoop me for it,' he said he didn't want to," she said.
According to the District Attorney's office Kauffman was placed on pre-trial diversion for two years.
That includes conditions of refraining from law violations, no contact with victim, paying court costs, and not possessing a firearm. She will be supervised by board of probation and parole.
