East Brainerd Road Shooting

August 7, 2008 - 3:34 PM

A man is shot in the middle of one of Chattanooga's busiest intersections, fueling all kinds of rumors about a gang related hit.

Right now police have not confirmed the shooting on East Brainerd Road is gang related.

Iy happened at the traffic light on East Brainerd Road right in front of Concord Baptist Church and the Baskin Robbins ice cream parlor.

Our first crew arrived within minutes of the shooting just after one o'clock and found paramedics treating the victim, who police say is a 21-year-old male.

We're told he was shot in the back and was taken to Erlanger Medical Center.

Even though there were plenty of cars passing through this busy intersection, police tell us none of the motorists stopped.

Officers say a black SUV with five people inside had stopped, when a silver colored car, possibly a Chevrolet, pulled up along the SUV and a man armed with a hand gun got out of the car.

Police spokesperson Jerri Weary said, "They were stopped in traffic at this light, trying to proceed when the suspect pulled up alongside the vehicle, exited the vehicle and started firing into the car."

Sgt. Weary says the young man shot in the back was a back seat passenger of the SUV, and the four other people including the driver were not hit by gunfire.
