Man Dies in Industrial Accident

Sweetwater police said a man has died from injuries while working with glass at a manufacturing plant.

Police told The Daily Post-Athenian in Athens that 51-year-old James Bales of Ten Mile was killed when he was struck by a piece of glass Tuesday afternoon at the SCHOTT Gemtron plant.

Police spokesman Kenny Wilkins said Bales' job was to cut glass and place excess pieces in a hopper. He said  somehow Bales in doing that was struck by a piece of glass.
Wilkins said "it looks purely accidental."
Plant spokesman John Canada said Wednesday that condolences of the company and co-workers "go out to his family." He called it a "very somber day."

He had been an employee of Gemtron Corp. in Sweetwater for 15 years. Funeral services will be at 8 p.m. Saturday at Ziegler Funeral Home in Athens, with visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday.
