SWAT situation in 1100 block of Wheeler Ave. in Chattanooga

UPDATE: Man Dies After Shooting Self During SWAT Standoff

A man shot himself in the head during a standoff with the Chattanooga SWAT team Tuesday afternoon. Thursday evening police spokesperson Sgt. Jerri Weary said that the man, William Key, 29, died.

It happened in the 1100 block of Wheeler Avenue. Sgt. Weary said on Monday Key fled the scene of a car accident and then tried to report his car stolen.

Tuesday morning when police came to Key's home to serve warrants for failure to report an accident, leaving the scene of an accident and filing a false police report, we're told the man, with a lengthy criminal history, went inside and refused to come out. His girlfriend was inside with him for several hours although she left the home mid-afternoon. She said she was not being held hostage, and that Key was theatening suicide.

After hours of negotiation, and after firing several canisters of tear gas, the SWAT team burst inside and said they found Key suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He was rushed to the hospital where he has undergone surgery and is in critical condition.
