Dog Possibly to Blame For Accidental Shooting
Comments 0 | Recommend 0A woman is recovering in the hospital after being shot inside her own home early this morning. We went back to the scene today to learn more about what happened as police continue to investigate. As a neighbor we found tells us, she thinks it was unintentional.
Mabel Howard said she woke up at about 4 am with police lights flashing outside on Ely Road.
Police and witness accounts on the scene point to this being an abnormal event.
Howard said, "From what I understand that the woman had heard someone over there, she thought it was a prowler, she saw someone in the yard, she told her husband and he got the gun and he started to the door and tripped over their dog and shot her in the back, that's what I heard."
Our cameras followed detectives as they returned to the scene to verify the story. Howard says she has met the victim before, even gone in their house and thinks the events she heard are credible and this is an unfortunate accident.
"It was shocking, shocking, I just couldn't believe," she said. "I didn't know at that time what had happened, I just could believe he had shot her on purpose. I just couldn't believe it. I believe it was an accident."
A department spokesperson says they hope to know more about what happened after they can interview the victim.
