Medical Examiner's Report: Teen Shot In Back

After days of conflicting information from police and witnesses, we now know where a fifteen-year-old, killed by a Housing Authority Officer, was shot.

Originally a spokesperson for the Chattanooga Police Department told us that the teenager had been shot in the upper chest area but at the same time witnesses maintained the officer shot him in the back. Today the police department told us the teen was running in the other direction, but raised his gun towards the officer and that's when he was indeed shot in the back.

A surveillance camera captures Alonzo O'Kelley Jr. just seconds before his death. O'Kelley is wearing the red shirt and walking down 4th Avenue. Seconds later you can see a black Dodge Durango traveling down the street. Police say a gunfight broke out between O'Kelley and the people in the Durango. You can then see someone running in the East Lake Courts and away from 4th Avenue.

Seconds later you can see Lt. Erik Reeves, with the Chattanooga Housing Authority, sprinting across the East Lake Courts presumably towards the gunfire.

"Shots fired, fourth avenue, black male - get on the ground!," you can hear Lt. Reeves yell.

But Chattanooga Housing Authority officials tell us O'Kelley did not drop his weapon. They say instead he aimed the weapon at the police officer and say that's when the officer pulled the trigger.

"Shots fired one down, one down, one down," Reeves yells again.

Witnesses have told us that O'Kelley had thrown his weapon to the ground and was running away when Reeves shot him. Today, NewsChannel-9 obtained a copy of O'Kelley's Medical Examiner's report which states the probable cause of death is a single gunshot wound to the back.

Surveillance cameras captured the seconds leading up to when O'Kelley was shot and killed but what you do not see is whether he had a gun in his hand or if he was running away from the officer.

The cameras caught several police cars responding to the scene and then you can hear Reeves trying to flag them down.

"You just passed me, you just passed me, come back," Reeves says. "Here here here!"

On Monday the Housing Authority told us that the shot to the back is consistent with the officer's statement about the shooting.

The Chattanooga Housing Authority has planned a press conference for Tuesday morning to discuss the medical examiner's report in more detail.
