Marti Rutherford Runs For Council, Again
Comments 0On Thursday, Dec. 11 Marti Rutherford filed her papers of intent to run for the District 6 City Council position. Ms. Rutherford has served three prior terms as City Councilwoman for District 6 and has worked closely with several area groups to ensure the continued growth and prosperity of the area.
Rutherford resigned her previous city council seat in October 2007 after an investigation showed she did not live in the district she was elected to represent, as required by Tennessee law.
Rutherford tells NewsChannel9.com however that, "On September 1, 2007, I rented an apartment in Belvoir at 408 South Sweetbriar Avenue and have made it my primary home. I am active in the Belvoir Neighborhood Association; in fact I will be at an Association meeting this evening (Dec. 11)."
"I worked side-by-side with District 6 residents for over 15 years, and together we have substantially improved the quality of life in our community. Not a day goes by that I don't receive a call or e-mail from one of my District 6 constituents with support and encouragement to regain my Council seat," said Ms. Rutherford. "My constituents have asked me to run again so that I can do my part in working together for the betterment of this city and its citizens. There is still much to accomplish, and my experience will help make that happen. I am grateful for the overwhelming support I have received and look forward to having the opportunity to once again serve the citizens of District 6."
During Ms. Rutherford's prior terms as City Councilwoman for District 6 she has worked to enhance neighborhood revitalization, decrease the number of questionable businesses and the nuisances they generate and curb the crime rates within the district. Her number one priority has been and will continue to be - constituent advocacy.
Ms. Rutherford also spearheaded the down-zoning of the Brainerd area to R1, garnering a blanket down-zone and only allowing single family homes to be constructed in most all residential properties. By working in collaboration with the residents, neighborhoods and businesses Ms. Rutherford has helped to create a more stable environment for District 6 citizens. Ms. Rutherford looks forward to continue working in the Shepherd and Tyner areas in anticipation of the release of the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport's Masterplan. Airport development will be a major factor within the District 6 area.
"I have known Marti Rutherford for over 25 years both personally and professionally," said Bobby Parker owner of the Brainerd Citgo Station. "As a business owner in Brainerd, I was always impressed and appreciated how much genuine interest she takes in the Brainerd area."
