A 17-month-old girl has drowned in a backyard swimming pool at her home in Baxter. Investigators said Katie Beth Maynard apparently wandered out the back door Tuesday night and climbed into an above-ground swimming pool. According to the Cookeville Herald-Citizen, the little girl is the granddaughter of Putnam County Executive Kim Blaylock and the great-granddaughter of state Sen. Charlotte Burks of Monterey.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has just released updated statistics showing nearly 300 children drown and another 3,000 are seriously injured each year in accidents occurring in swimming pools and spas.
