Mother Outraged by R-Rated Movie Shown to 6th Grade Class

A parent says her eleven year old daughter was shown a violent R-rated movie in a Whitfield County social studies classroom, without her, or the school's permission. Tina McCurley says her eleven-year-old daughter Lauren watched 300 in her 6th grade social studies classroom. 300 is about the ancient Spartan army and 300 soldiers' fight to the death to protect Sparta from a tyrant who wants to dethrone the king, and take over the city-state. The movie is rated R for its violent content, including graphic fighting scenes, gore-filled death scenes, and sexual content.

McCurley says she never gave permission for her daughter to watch an R-rated film.

Now, McCurley says, the girl is having nightmares.

McCurley is outraged and took her complaints to the principal and school administrators. Administrator Richard Schoen says they are now interviewing the teacher and students, and investigating whether the entire movie, or just clips were shown to the classroom.

The Whitfield County school system's policy states that a movie must be on an approved list before it is shown in class. If it is not, then the permission of the principal is required.

There are no R-rated movies on that list, including '300.'

McCurley says, she does not see the educational value, and not even one clip of an R-rated movie is appropriate for a 6th grade classroom, especially not without her permission.

The school system hopes to have the investigation complete by Friday.
