Update: More Than 50 Fraternity Members Arrested

A fraternity outing fizzles after they party too loud into the night. Now, bail bondsmen are cashing in.

We're told the Polk County Sheriff's Department arrested fifty-six members of the Sigma Chi Fraternity early Sunday morning. We spoke with one bondsman who says they typically only bond out six or seven people a week, so the thought of fifty-six in one day, for him, is like a dream come true.

Eric Simonds, with Benton Bonding, has worked as a bondsman for three years, he says he's never had the chance to bond out 56 people at once.

"That's an incredibly large number I actually asked him twice because I thought he gave me the wrong answer," Simonds says.

But that's how many Vanderbilt University students the Polk County sheriff's department arrested early Sunday morning after a late night party at the High Country campground.

"I noticed that they had been drinking because half of them were still sick from the night before," Simonds says.

Polk County Sheriff Bill Davis says the campground's manager called the sheriff's department after asking the group to quite down several times. Davis says the students were making loud noises and setting off firecrackers in the middle of the night. One arrest report says the sheriff's deputies found four kegs laying on the ground.

"You know it's just something that young people make the mistake of doing and it gets a little bit out of hand and this is what happened here," Sheriff Davis says.

When it was all over, Simonds bonded nineteen of the men out - most charged with underage drinking and disorderly conduct - although Simonds says some of his clients were sleeping in the back of their cars when the deputies arrived.

"I spoke to one of the guys whose dad informed he's one of the top lawyers in Dalles Texas, so I don't think he'll let that stand," Simonds says.

And while some of the student's parents aren't happy, Simonds says he'll post bond for nineteen people any day of the week.

"So would you say it was bad for them but good for you all?," We ask. "Absolutely ...Definitely good for us," Simonds says.

And we received a statement from Vanderbilt saying they're aware of the arrests and they're investigating the incident.
