Opening of New Hixson Middle School Delayed

Hamilton County Schools officials have delayed the opening of the new Hixson Middle School to Spring 2009. The school was originally scheduled to open in January 2009.

Gary Waters, Assistant Superintendent of Auxiliary Services, said everyone involved felt that it was in the best interest of students to delay the opening of the new school. He noted that the District was focused on not compromising the quality of instruction in classrooms with constant construction noise and disruptions.

"It was an extremely aggressive schedule and we are not at the stage where we can complete the project by Christmas," Mr. Waters said. "The contractor has made the best effort to get the building ready, working 6-day shifts for the last 2 months. But they just couldn't get it done."

Mr. Waters said construction crews will continue to work on completing the new school in a quick and efficient manner with students occupying the building when they return from spring break.
